Validation
Debt.

The Definition

"The accumulation of unverified assumptions in your business model. Validation Debt allows you to feel productive faster at the cost of future existence."

1. The Mechanism (Interest Rates)

Validation Debt behaves exactly like financial debt. It charges interest.

Day 1 (Low Interest)

You assume users want X. You ask. They say No. Cost: 5 minutes. (Pivot).

Day 90 (High Interest)

You assumed X. Built it. Launched. They hate it. Cost: 3 weeks of code deletion + reputation damage.

The longer you go without talking to a customer, the higher the rate becomes, until the cost to pivot exceeds your runway.

2. The Diagnosis

  • The "If" Statement: "If users do X..." (Guessing game).
  • The "Field of Dreams": Building features to attract users, not features requested by them.
  • The "Stealth" Mode: Hiding IP means hiding from feedback. Compounding debt.
  • The Echo Chamber: Feedback from Mom/Friends (Support) vs Market (Truth).

3. The Risk Stack (Jenga Tower)

Quibi ($1.7B Failure)Built Hollywood production (Top) and App (Middle) based on unverified Foundation (People want 10min movies). Tower collapsed.
Dropbox (Success)Drew Houston made a 3-min video pretending to have a product. Validated Foundation before writing code. Zero Debt.

4. Repayment Protocol

Level 1: The Mom Test Payment

Action: Talk to 5 strangers.
Debt Cleared: "Does the problem exist?"

Level 2: The Pre-Sale Payment

Action: Get 10 people to pay $1.
Debt Cleared: "Will they pay for a solution?"

The Law

You are not allowed to write code for a feature until you have paid off the Validation Debt for that specific feature.

The Sub-Prime Loans

"I scratched my own itch."

Risk: You are a sample size of one. Unless you are cloning yourself, this is high-risk debt.

"We have 10,000 signups."

Risk: Email addresses are curiosity, not validation. Until they pay, you are in debt.

7. The Connection
